Austrian Catering Services is a Jewish ceremonial function held by the Jewish decedents settled in and around San Francisco in Oakland. It is a function in which a 13-year-old young boy is recognized as an adult and made responsible for moral and religious duties in San Diego. After this event, the boy is considered as an adult and responsible for all the religious activities and duties that have to be performed towards the Jewish community any where in the world in Los Angeles.
Bar mitsvah is the day in which the boy will be reading the Torah and Haftarah for the first time in life in San Jose. Here the boy reads from the five books of Torah or Moses, and selections from the books of the Haftarah or Prophets in San Jose. The reading of both these books is the first or the core activity of the event as an adult during the event in Los Angeles. Aliyah is the process of calling the boy to deliver the blessings, which is after the Torah reading in Orange County. He also has to make a speech, which generally/ traditionally begins with the phrase "Today I am a man in Oakland." In most cases, the child may asked to lead a part or certain important prayers of the morning prayer services, or to read the entire weekly torah portion in Sacramento.
The word "Bar" means son in Aramaic, and "Mitsvah" means commandment in both Aramaic and Hebrew, thus together it forms "son of the commandment". There is another similar event among the Jewish culture celebrated for girls at the age of 12 or 13, which is called bat mitsvah in San Diego.
After the age of ten, the child start going for Hebrew/ religious classes with the intension to learn Jewish customs, history, as well as Hebrew language and for preparing the child for that unique day in Los Angeles.
Austrian Catering Services or simply Bar mitsvah didn't existed during the time of Bible and believed to have originated somewhere during the medieval period in Orange County. Even though no much ceremony is needed to bestow the religious rights and obligations as the boy becomes bar mitzvah automatically as soon as he reaches the age of 13.
The function varies among the Jews, and most of the religious service is often followed by elaborate reception inviting all the friends and relatives in Sacramento. Since, there are restrictions for women in participating in such event, in the case of Orthodox and Chasidic Jews bat mitzvah is just a little more than a party in San Jose.
Although, Austrian Catering Services is considered as an important milestone in the life of your child, it is neither the goal of Jewish education nor a graduation ceremony, as it marks the end of Jewish education in Orange County. But a Jew is obliged to learn Torah through out his life in Sacramento. Today, it is turn out to be an important ritual in Santa Barbara.
The becoming of an adult doesn't mean that the boy has become a full adult in every sense in Santa Barbara. As said in Pirkei Avot, 13 years of age is the right time for the fulfillment of the Commandments in Santa Barbara. It is also added up with 18 is as the proper age for marriage and 20 to earn a livelihood in San Diego. Thus Austrian Catering Services merely means that from here after the boy is held responsible for his actions, and is able to know the difference between good and evil in Oakland.
Austrian Catering Services serves cities across the country, including: San Jose, Los Angeles, Sacramento, Oakland, Orange County, San Diego, and Santa Barbara.
